Abstract
Collaboration being center stage in this initiative, we investigate the dimensions and determinants to measure collaboration success (Walker and Lloyd-Walker, 2015), hence allowing action- intervention as a research methodology (Oliva, 2019) during the research project. Therefore to help in this endeavor, we asked ourselves: How to measure collaboration within IDP (Integrated Design Project) complex project-teams? How to create a collaboration index used analogously to scope and budget indexes by those project-teams, and under what form would it take shape? To be aligned with our partner’s (Société Québécoise des Infrastructures (SQI)) wish to be involved in continuous improvement, an Action Research (AR) approach has been chosen. The study extended over a three-year period with a total of nine AR learning cycles leading to multiple case studies with significant and rich results regarding SQI’s collaboration within the project team. As a result, collaboration index measurements (CIMQ) within the IDP teams as well as a collaboration indicator tool were created. Paired with other indexes and data in PowerBI, SQI project teams are systematically using this novel collaboration index measures to monitor and orient their effort toward success (n=851). Quebec’s government as a representative of complex adaptive social systems (CASS) is making strides in organizational effort in hope for better project performance through ensuring rigorous planning, implementation and monitoring of projects (Government of Quebec, 2022). To achieve the desired outcome, this article identifies the impact of multidisciplinary and multi-organizational stakeholders collaboration in the preliminary project cycle stages to improve and accelerate the project’s execution process while maintaining a satisfactory level of collaboration between the parties. This CIMQ born out of this extensive action research contributes directly to innovation of complex system, especially towards sustainable development objectives as collaboration is a key ingredient for successful and performing infrastructure projects.
